After some very serious convincing (getting a writ signed by St. She speaks out that no mother should ever have to bury her child, and that immediately gets the message across. Seeing the pain and tears on her face reflecting her inner torture and agony over her son’s face allows us to warm up to Judas somewhat, despite our knowledge of his betrayal of Jesus Christ. The play begins with a monologue by and a spotlight on Judas’ mother. The story shows us the development of the purgatory trial of the apostle Judas Iscariot. I thought that it was a very useful technique.
That spotlight temporarily transported the audience to a new location and time without the participants having to take the time to change all of the props. Whenever ‘aside stories’ needed to be told in order to better explain the circumstances and impressions, the lights would dim everywhere except for a spotlight in the center of the stage where the action took place. For the entire duration of the play the stage was set as a courtroom in Purgatory (‘Hope’). My roommate Sahar Kazmi is a member of the University Theatre Guild at UT and invited me to come out to their newest play The Last Days of Judas Iscariot, written by Steven Adly Guirgis and directed by Katy Poulter. Continuing on with my pursuit of theatrical performance this weekend, I went to see another play on Saturday.
